Clearing the Gateway of Digestion 🪥
In Ayurveda, the mouth isn’t just where digestion begins—it’s a sacred mirror for your internal state. Daily oral care rituals like Jiwah Prakshalana (tongue cleaning) and Gandusha (oil pulling) are more than just good hygiene. They are acts of reverence—simple, powerful practices that detoxify, awaken digestion, enhance the senses, and invite clarity from the very first breath of your day.
“The tongue is a map of your inner state. Keep it clean, and clarity will follow.”
— Ayurvedic Wisdom
🌀 Part 1: Jiwah Prakshalana (Tongue Cleaning)

💡 What Is It?
Jiwah Prakshalana is the ancient Ayurvedic practice of scraping the tongue to remove ama (toxins), dead cells, and bacteria. This clears the first gate of digestion and helps spark agni (digestive fire). It’s a tiny act with massive ripple effects—physical, mental, and energetic.
🛠 What You’ll Need:
-
Tongue scraper (preferred materials by dosha below)
-
Warm water for rinsing
🔑 Best Scrapers by Dosha:
-
Vata = Gold
-
Pitta = Silver
-
Kapha = Copper
-
Tridoshic = Stainless Steel
✨ Don’t have a tongue scraper? Use the edge of a spoon in a pinch.
📿 How to Practice Jiwah Prakshalana
-
👅 Stick Out Your Tongue
Hold your scraper with both hands. Extend the tongue. -
🧼 Scrape Gently
Start at the back of the tongue. Scrape forward using gentle, even pressure. Repeat 7–10 times, rinsing between each pass. -
👁 Observe & Rinse
Rinse with warm water. Take a look at the coating—thick white or yellow buildup may indicate digestive ama.
🧠 Pro Tips:
-
A thick coating = a sign of ama (toxicity) in the system
-
Consistency is everything—tongue scraping works best when done daily
🌀 Part 2: Gandusha (Oil Pulling)

💡 What Is It?
Gandusha is the practice of swishing warm oil in the mouth to draw toxins from the tongue, gums, throat, and jaw. It’s deeply detoxifying and helps lubricate the mouth, calm the nervous system, and awaken clarity.
“The oil-pulling ritual purifies the senses, strengthens the jaw and gums, and draws toxins from the entire system.”
— Ayurvedic Wisdom
🛠 What You’ll Need:
-
1 Tbsp high-quality oil (see dosha guide)
-
Small trash bin or tissue for disposal
-
Warm water for rinsing
🪔 Best Oils by Dosha:
-
Vata = Sesame oil
-
Pitta = Coconut or Sunflower oil
-
Kapha = Sesame or Sunflower oil
📿 How to Practice Gandusha
-
🌅 Morning Ritual
Practice on an empty stomach, after tongue scraping. -
🥄 Add the Oil
Place 1 tablespoon of oil in your mouth. Start with less if you're new. -
🌊 Swish Gently
Gently swish the oil for 2–5 minutes, working up to 10–15 over time. Do not swallow or gargle. -
🗑 Spit It Out
Spit into the trash or a tissue—never down the sink. -
💧 Rinse & Brush
Rinse with warm water. Follow with brushing if desired.
🧠 Pro Tips:
-
Avoid vigorous swishing—let the oil gently bathe your mouth
-
Add a drop of clove, turmeric, or tea tree oil for added support
-
Follow with salt water or herbal rinse if needed
-
Stay seated and relaxed—Gandusha is also a moment of meditation
